Many of us in Australia like to surround ourselves with different pets and when it comes to choosing the right pet for you, there are some things that you need to be looking out for. Choosing the right pet will depend on the time that you have free to take care of your pet and the costs involved as well. Low maintenance pets like hamsters are relatively easy to take care of and the budget for such a thing is quite low. A cat on the other hand, while quite low maintenance, needs more care and attention and before choosing your first cat, there are a number of things that you need to think about before you make your decision.

Cats can be fickle. So it is important to choose the cat that likes you and you like it. This is crucial because a cat is not a toy and it is a real living thing that is going to need you to take care of it for the next ten to fifteen years and that’s a lot of responsibility. Before, you even pick your future companion may it be an American bobtail or a Ragdoll cat, pet insurance needs to be on the top of your list of things to get. The pet insurance means that your cat will be taken care of if there is an accident and it gets hurt or if it gets quite ill. Having the right pet insurance means that your cat will get the best of care and the best vet. When choosing your cat, you need to consider the following.

  • A Kitten or an Adult Cat?

Kittens are great. They are a little ball of fluff that are ready to play all the time and they have an abundance of energy always. They are going to need a lot of attention and you need to keep an eye on them so that they don’t get up to something they shouldn’t be doing. The kitten you choose now may not be the same when it grows into an adult and its personality may change.

An adult cat, on the other hand, is a lot calmer and a lot more relaxed and you get what you see. Then maybe you need to look for a cat that is around one year old and you know what kind of cat it is going to be.

Consider Your Family

Kittens and young kids don’t mix and the kids see the animal as a toy and not as an animal. They tend to be a little rough with the kitten and the kitten reacts by lashing out and scrabbing them. Kids start crying and no one is happy. As children, they tend to just reach out and grab the closest part of the kitten, be it the head or the tail and the kitten may end up getting hurt. If you decide on a kitten, then you need to be supervising the kids and the kitten at all times.

There’s a lot to consider when getting a cat, so be sure to do your homework and make the right choices.
